Currency

The currency in Bahrain is Bahraini Dinar (BHD) with an exchange rate of 10BHD = £14.19GBP or £10GBP = 7.05BHD. (Correct as at April 2005).

Political/ Religious Climate

Islam is the main religion and although Bahrain is generally recognised as having relatively progressive attitudes and laws, women are expected to keep arms and legs covered and are generally not on their own in a public place.Displays of affection are also discouraged in public and can be subject to penalties.

Culture and Leisure

There is a wide range of leisure time activities to keep you occupied in Bahrain. Manama, the capital city, is probably the most cosmopolitan of all the Gulf cities. Horse riding, golf and exceptional diving opportunities are all widely available and alcohol is sold freely. It's worth noting that Thursday and Friday make up the Bahrain weekend and also that Ramadan, which takes place at a different time each year on the Western calendar, is strictly adhered to throughout Bahrain . This means that eating, drinking or smoking in public from sunrise to sunset is frowned upon.

Weather/Climate

The best time of year in Bahrain is between October and April as the humidity from May to September is extremely high and day time temperatures can reach 36 degrees C ( 97 degrees F). Rainfall is fairly non-existent and the only time the weather can turn miserable is in December and January.

Accommodation/Transport/Education

Bahrain has a good standard of accommodation available for expatriates. There is no internal railway system in Bahrain but bus services are regular. An international driving permit is required to drive a car here. The airport is a major transit point for international travellers between the Far East and the West with most major airlines servicing Bahrain. There are several fee-paying schools for expatriate children in Bahrain . Teaching is in English and they follow the British and American curriculum.
